Ethan Canin said that he wrote 'The Accountant" (in The Palace Thief) because he wanted to write a story in which a pair a socks seemed important. Pick an ordinary object. Make it someone's obsession. Write a story about that obsession.

The Glass

There was this glass, that was past down from generation to generation. Nobody knew why it was so valuable anymore, until one day an heir who happened to be a chemist noticed that the glass had an astronomically advanced makeup, it was made from stardust, pure stardust and was magically brought to this day from the future because its composition was unlike anything that could be found on this planet or in the nearby galaxy.
